Bye-Bye, Digital Marketing Agencies
A photographer who had never touched AI replaced one in three hours. Here is what that means for your business.
Here is what nobody in the agency world wants to say out loud: the thing they charge $800 to $2,000 a month for stopped being hard.
For the last few years, the AI-forward agencies had a real advantage. Setting up a voice agent, wiring lead capture, automating follow-up, posting on a schedule. It took technical know-how most small businesses did not have. So the agency came in, layered their services on top of a $20-a-month AI subscription, and charged you monthly for the difficulty.
The difficulty is gone. The bill is still there.
Last week I spent three hours with Kurt and Tana Nelson. They run Innovative Images (innovativeimagesphotos.com), a professional photography studio here in McKinney. Twenty-five plus years in business. He shoots, she does the marketing. Neither of them had ever touched AI.
In one sitting: their own AI subscription set up, live changes shipped to their website, a marketing workflow started for the Instagram posting Tana handles, and an action tracker built so they knew exactly what to do next.
Here is the part that matters. Three hours after I left, Kurt sat back down at the same window and kept working. Alone. A man who had never used AI in his life was making changes to his own website that afternoon, on a $20 subscription, with nobody standing over his shoulder.
That used to be a $1,500-a-month retainer.
I watched the same collapse happen in my own business this month. GotaGuy, my home repair company, needed ad campaigns built in Meta Ads Manager for two markets. Campaign structure, budgets, zip code targeting, scheduling, the works. That is a line item on any agency’s invoice.
I never logged into Ads Manager. The AI built, targeted, and scheduled both campaigns through Meta’s own API while I reviewed and approved. The work happened in one window, the same window where I write proposals, track my week, and drafted this newsletter.
That is the real shift. Not smarter models. Fewer windows. When the AI can connect to the tools your business already runs on, the jumping between platforms goes away, and the agency’s job quietly goes with it.
The uncomfortable math for agencies is this: it only takes one person. Not your whole company. One front desk person, one office manager, one owner’s kid home from college who learns a little AI, and the mystery evaporates. They look at what the agency set up and realize they can see all of it, run all of it, and change all of it themselves.
I am not saying every agency dies tomorrow. Some businesses will keep paying the retainer the way some people never look at their cable bill. But the value has moved, and the businesses that figure that out first get to keep the $18,000 a year.
The gap is no longer know-how. It is the first three hours.
That first three hours is now a thing I do. It is called the AI Fast-Track Session: you, your computer, your business, your own $20 subscription. We set it up together and ship one real piece of work before I leave. $750, once. Not a retainer.

P.S. I turned the setup this newsletter describes into a product. The One-Window Setup is the exact framework my businesses run on, in one document you load into your AI, and your AI builds your working environment with you. It went live yesterday at kerzie.ai/one-window. $99, one time.
